Philips Screeneo U5
An evening living room lit only by the projected picture: two friends on a side sofa laughing over a game controller, the wall-filling game scene thrown from the projector on the cabinet beneath it.

Preparing for Indiegogo

screeneo.com recruited the launch list for Philips’s first 4K ultra-short-throw projector.

The homepage I rewrote

I refreshed screeneo.com's copy to center on the coming U5 launch, pointing the page at one goal: the email list.

The screeneo.com homepage as it ran before launch: the U5 hero over a dark living-room scene, an email signup band for launch-day pricing, and the ultra-short-throw feature sections.

On Indiegogo, the list met the campaign page. The walkthrough below covers what I wrote ↓

A huge 4K screen, only during showtime. Enjoy ultra-vivid 150-inch visuals in 4K UHD with the new Philips Screeneo U5, a projector that features cutting-edge laser and ultra-short throw technology for an absolute cinema experience.
A nine-icon feature grid: True 4K UHD (3840 x 2160 pixel, 0.21 throw ratio), 2,200 ANSI lumens (day or night use), REC709 and HDR10 with Dolby Vision (perfect colors), FlowMotion 4 (MEMC+ technology), Android TV operating system, Chromecast built-in (cast photos, music and videos), 8-point calibration (accurate screen placement), eye protection (automatic screen dimming), and DTS HD with Dolby Atmos (room-filling sound).
Set up 11 inches away for a big 120-inch 4K screen. Optimize your space with the lowest throw ratio, 0.21, on the market. Set Screeneo U5 on a tabletop, TV shelf, or bedroom wardrobe to enjoy your favorite content like never before — a massive 120-inch screen from just 11 inches away, and even up to 150 inches. A diagram measures the wall gap at two distances: 16.5 inches (42 cm) for a 150-inch image and 11 inches (28.1 cm) for a 120-inch image.
A technical drawing pairs screen size, image height and distance from the wall in a table running 80 inches up to 150 inches, followed by a photograph of two people in armchairs watching the projected picture in a sunlit living room, one holding a remote.
Not your typical projector. Screeneo U5 is an Ultra-Short Throw laser projector that can be placed just inches/cm away from your wall or screen for crystal-clear True 4K UHD entertainment. A color wheel marks an ultra-wide color gamut at 130 percent REC.709, beside REC709, HDR10 and Dolby Vision Atmos badges over the projector photographed on a wooden sideboard.
As seen on — pull quotes from New Atlas on the 25,000-hour laser light source and 4K UHD at a game-friendly 60 Hz refresh rate, 9to5Toys on a 120-inch screen from a mere 11-inch wall offset, Werd on FlowMotion 4 MEMC+ and spot-on REC709, HDR10 and Dolby colors, and Mondo Projos on the sharpness of the image and the precision of its colors after calibration.
10+ years of movie magic. Building off of more than a century of innovation and more than one decade in the home projector space, Screeneo U5 is the product of tireless technological advancement, representing the very best of Philips — a state-of-the-art all-in-one 4K laser projector at the most competitive price you'll find.
A dated lineup runs 2013 Screeneo 1550, 2014 Screeneo 1590, 2015 Screeneo 1690, 2016 Screeneo 2.0, 2018 Screeneo U3 and 2022 Screeneo U4, closing on the highlighted 2022 Screeneo U5 — Android TV, laser, 4K, 2,200 lumens, the first 4K Ultra-Short Throw projector in the line.
True 4K UHD sharpness. Watch movies and more in True 4K UHD sharpness, full of the fine detail that can be lost at lower resolutions — text stays crystal-clear from 80 up to 150 inches, with Texas Instruments DLP cinema technology. A 3840 x 2160 callout over a macro render of a water droplet, with 1080P and 4K comparison tabs.
Stunning visuals with Dolby Vision. With ultra-vivid colors, sharper contrast, and richer details, Dolby Vision keeps you coming back for more; dynamic tone mapping handles any source without fiddling with settings.
Watch when you want. 2,200 ANSI lumens means a colorful and bright picture in any indoor environment, whether there's ambient lighting, total darkness, or even a flood of daylight — over one projected picture split down the middle, a daylit room on the left and a darkened one on the right.
Bring cinema home. Experience 4K UHD movies the way the cinematographers intended with a picture that's as sharp as it is massive — a scene from The Batman (2022), headed Shot in 4K, split between Shown in 1080p and See it in 4K, above a strip comparing other affordable home projectors with Screeneo U5.
Fine tune the perfect picture. Unlike traditional manual correction methods, motorized 8-point keystone adjustment calibrates the image to your wall or screen in a snap.
Enjoy smarter entertainment. Android TV makes it easier to get more from your TV — 400,000+ movies and shows across streaming services, Google voice control, and Chromecast built-in for casting photos, videos and music — over a projected home screen of streaming apps and film artwork.
Sensational visuals when on, invisible when off. Whether projecting onto a screen or directly onto the wall, you'll barely notice Screeneo U5 until it's powered on — seen from above, the projector lies on a wood plank against a teal ground, a remote beside it and a hand reaching in from the right.
Big time face time: get closer to that face-to-face in-person experience when you use Screeneo U5 to display your video conference meeting rooms, over a projected grid of call participants. Below, Level up to 4K: play like the pros and hook up your favorite consoles to play games in True 4K UHD at 60 Hz.
It runs in the Screeneo family — a two-column comparison setting the Screeneo U4, the home cinema experience at 1080p Full HD, up to a 120-inch picture and a 0.25:1 throw ratio, against the Screeneo U5, the full cinema experience with Android TV at 4K Ultra HD, up to 150 inches and a 0.21:1 throw ratio.

Selling the Movie Night

The opening sells the off state as hard as the movie night: a huge screen only at showtime, a blank wall the rest of the week — where a TV leaves its black rectangle up all day.

Nine Answers Up Front

It front-loads the specs a buyer might otherwise google, before the page expands the biggest ones.

Color Gamut as a Wheel

The 130% color-gamut lockup was my concept — a wheel that makes an abstract spec visible, with the standards badged beneath it.

Reviews Before There Are Reviews

There are no customer reviews to show at launch, so I styled press quotes the way I’d style reviews — outside voices vouching for the specs buyers doubt.

A Century of Philips

Crowdfunding’s real objection is whether the thing ever ships. The copy stakes a century of Philips and a decade of projectors against that doubt.

The 1080p-vs-4K Frame

The 4K half is sharper and its color is richer, so the DLP color-accuracy line above it is proved by the same picture.

Show the Difference

Most theaters weren’t projecting 4K yet, so seeing it as intended meant seeing it at home; the 1080p split shows the gap. The Batman was in cinemas that year, so I chose it.

The Hours It’s Switched Off

The design section answers what no spec sheet can: the headline promises a projector you barely notice until it’s powered on.

A Second Job for the Wall

Video calls at wall scale give the projector a weekday.
